Chapter Three

Wondering what in the world had happened, Tommy was alarmed by the scene before him. He was thankful that he had called the ambulance before leaving home. He heard a screech of brakes outside. His heart calmed. Good, now he is rescued. Running to the front door, he saw the ambulance. They were removing a stretcher. Leaping out the front door, Tommy was yelling.

“Hurry! Hurry! There are two of them. But I have no idea what happened or how badly they are hurt. I see blood around the house and on the bed where both of them are unconscious.” Tommy ran on excitedly. “The girl seems to be angry with my brother because he saved her from dying, then she passed out,” Tommy said in wonderment.

As the paramedics proceeded into the house, Tommy said, “one of the victims is Ted Maxwell, my brother. A girl who is a stranger is the other victim. I think it is my brother that is bleeding but not where.”

He led the two paramedics into the bedroom, leaving the stretcher in the hallway. They found the couple passed out together as if, in an embracing sleep. The paramedic quickly loosened the blankets around the girl and threw them to the other side of the bed. One slipped to the floor.

He eased the girl down, laying her flat, trying to determine the extent of her injuries by running his hands over her gently. Her ankle appeared swollen. He couldn’t find any other physical injuries, only pieces of glass particles in her skin and hair. The ambulance driver strode over to the other side of the bed, avoiding the bunched fallen blanket, to reach Ted. His partner was taking the girl’s vital signs, while the driver tried to ease Ted down on the bed. Hesitating because of the excessive blood.

The blond man said, “this girl’s vital signs are almost normal, so I think she is okay but probably passed out in shock. Throw me the blankets.” The driver reached down to pick up the blankets and covered her again with his partner's help. Then the driver, Hank, came around the bed and said, “I think it would be best if we put the man directly on the stretcher.”

Tommy was easing the bulky stretcher into the room as the blond guy Bill reached for the stretcher to pull it into position. Hank had no precise knowledge as to the extent of the male victim’s injury. “I think it will be difficult to lift this unconscious man without causing more damage to him.”

“We have no choice if we want to get him out of here,” Bill said. “Tommy, you hold the stretcher firmly while we try to grab your brother. Then you ease it around while we get him off the bed. We know he is bleeding, but we are not able to determine where. It could be his side or back from the distribution of the blood.”

“Ted, can you hear me?” Bill was saying over and over. Ted did not respond.
